Founding PMMs — you can’t walk in and expect to change the launch process on day one. Here are five tips for building credibility (ie. winning your way into Product) 👇
1️⃣ Bring value they ask for first
Don’t run in guns a-blazin’ asking for a bunch of changes. Start by looking for areas where PMs want and need you help. Start with a few simple wins before you start asking for things.
2️⃣ Perfect the launch motion, then move down the process
Your end goal may be to influence the product roadmap and plant yourself earlier in the development process. But start by perfecting the GTM motion. Earn your seat at the table by showing you can execute on a few launches.
3️⃣ Don’t scrap their process — evolve it
Even if the status quo is a complete mess, don’t come in looking to change everything at once. People object to big changes. Make incremental improvements.
4️⃣ Align your goals with theirs
If your product team is focused on increasing adoption or driving in-app upgrades — make that a focus of your's too. If you want to work as a team, you need to shoot for the same goal.
5️⃣ Build 1:1 relationships and trust
You don’t build strong relationships with a “team.” You build it with individual people. So, get to know your new teammates personally.
Could you do all this and still have trouble breaking in to product? For sure. But taking these steps will dramatically increase your chances of success.
